LCIA Perspectives: Interview with Professor Maxi Scherer 2 May 2018 The fourth instalment of the LCIA Perspectives series presents an interview between the LCIA’s Director General, Dr Jacomijn van Haersolte-van Hof and Professor Maxi Scherer of WilmerHale and Queen Mary University London. Together, they discuss current issues in international commercial arbitration, including arbitrator challenges, tribunal secretaries and diversity. The first part of the interview introduces Maxi’s educational background, and her career as a prolific arbitration practitioner and distinguished academic. Click here to watch Part 1: Introduction. Part two reviews challenges under LCIA Rules and the LCIA Challenge Decision Database published earlier this year. Maxi and Jackie examine the value of providing reasoned decisions to parties and providing anonymised decisions to the public. Click here to view the full Challenge Decision Database. These changes emphasise the central role of communication and consent in appointing a tribunal secretary, and ensure that parties are given the opportunity to have their say. The third part of the interview explores Maxi’s personal experience with the use of tribunal secretaries, and her involvement in the LCIA’s recent tribunal secretaries event in Paris.
