Equality, Diversity and Inclusion In response to valuable stakeholder input and following careful consideration, the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) Board proudly affirmed in 2024 a commitment to advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within the arbitration community. This endeavour hinges upon a parallel commitment to excellence, striving to foster more representative participation while enhancing the quality of proceedings. By promoting best practices in diversity and inclusivity at every stage of arbitration and within the broader community, the LCIA aims to model a sustainable approach to cultural change in the sector. These efforts, in turn, reinforce the legitimacy of the global arbitration ecosystem and contribute to a more dynamic and effective dispute resolution process. The LCIA’s EDI Initiative rests upon three foundational pillars focused on delivering tangible value to the sector through concrete activities and resources. Integral to success has been collaboration and knowledge sharing with key users formalised with the establishment of the EDI Steering Group, comprising of representatives from over 30 leading arbitration firms and chambers - guided by a group of 'Champions' who provide accountability for each pillar (noted below). 1. Widening Event Participation: Facilitating access and fostering a sense of belonging among diverse audiences at arbitration events. Key Achievements: he LCIA’s "Event Mentorship" programme was launched in 2024, connecting newer entrants to arbitration with experienced practitioners, with the aim of fostering confidence, networking, and active participation. The programme was piloted at two flagship LCIA events (YIAG Tylney Symposia), with mentees reporting increased confidence and inclusion. Following Board endorsement, this programme is now being formalised as a core LCIA offering. 2. Promoting Best Practices: Elevating methodologies that integrate inclusion as a systematic consideration and make diversity a practical choice. Key Achievements: The LCIA EDI Guidelines, were launched in December 2024 following extensive consultation with external stakeholders. They provide practical, non-binding recommendations for incorporating EDI into arbitration proceedings, covering topics including candidate identification, selection for appointment, and hearing conduct. A public awareness campaign is underway to educate the international arbitration community on the utility of the Guidelines and encourage their routine usage. 3. Arbitrator Education & Training: Enhancing competencies and cultivating mindsets that mitigate bias and foster sounds decision-making. Key Achievements: In December 2024, the LCIA piloted unconscious bias training tailored to arbitration, engaging arbitrators, legal experts, and Board members. Positive feedback affirmed the value of tailored training in addressing bias. A follow-up session on cultural competency is planned for March 2025, reflecting the LCIA's commitments to impactful, ongoing learning.
